A NEW LOOK AT HOW PEOPLE SOLVE DRINKING PROBLEMS: Learning from People Who Have Been There

By Anne M. Fletcher, MS, RD

Author, Sober for Good and the Thin For Life Books

How do people really overcome drinking problems – whether they go to Alcoholics Anonymous, quit drinking on their own, or seek help from lesser-known recovery programs? For this one- to two-hour seminar, Fletcher gives an overview of her findings from 222 “masters” of former drinking problems -- people who recovered in many different ways, both traditional (AA) and nontraditional. Not only does she present the keys to success common to the masters, but she reveals ways in which many of them challenge long-held assumptions about what it takes to overcome problem drinking and achieve long-term sobriety. Here are just some of the topics covered, always by example of people who have succeeded:

  • Who are the masters? Recognizing the spectrum of drinking problems -- from relatively minor to very severe
  • The many routes to sobriety -- changing the one-size-fits-all mentality for recovery
  • How much alcohol is too much alcohol? Wake-up-call questions for recognizing a drinking problem
  • Myths about alcohol recovery -- challenging assumptions, such as...
    • You have to “hit bottom”
    • You have to call yourself an “alcoholic”
    • You have to be “in recovery” forever
    • You have to have a “higher power”
    • You can’t do much to help a problem drinker until he or she is ready
  • Common threads amongst the masters -- strategies shared by people who recovered in different ways. For instance...
    • Keeping the memory fresh
    • Making a commitment
    • Finding fulfillment through fitness
    • Celebrating sobriety
  • How family and friends can help: What the masters have to say about effective ways to deal with problem drinkers

The overriding message of this seminar is that there are no right or wrong answers in sobriety but that people can arrive at the same endpoint in a variety of ways. By offering a host of options, recounting case stories and anecdotes, and sharing findings consistent with scientific studies, Fletcher’s ultimate goal is to help people find solutions that are right for them.
